KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah will open the national-level Maal Hijrah 1431H/2009 celebration themed "Strengthening Fraternity, Empowering the Community" at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on Friday.
A statement from the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said the theme was in line with the government's efforts to build a united society based on the 1Malaysia concept by building unity and strengths.
This is to create a community of excellenc that is able to compete and face the challenges of globalisation and in science and technology as prescribed by Islam.
The highlight of the celebration will be the announcement of two Tokoh Maal Hijrah Award winners from among local and foreign distinguish personalities.
The recipients must have a wide and deep knowledge of Islam, have outstanding character and personality, and have contributed to the propagation of Islam and development of the ummah (Muslim community).
Each of the recipients will receive cash of RM100,000, a plaque, medal and certificate of appreciation.
Up to 2008, 19 individuals from different backgrounds and professions had been bestowed with the award.
The statement said the government organised the Maal Hijrah celebration yearly as a continuous effort to encourage Muslims to remember the Islamic calendar via learning about Islamic history and the major historical event of Hijrah, which was the flight of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.
"Muslims must learn from this major event by effecting change in various aspects of their own lives to achieve distinction," it said.
In conjunction with the Maal Hijrah national-level celebration this time, a special forum with the panellists comprising Ustaz Farid Ravi Abdullah and Ustaz Badli Shah Alaudin will be held at Masjid Negara tomorrow.
There will also be religious talks, gotong-royong, nasyid competition, visits to Orang Asli settlements, hospitals and orphanages, programmes with the disabled, and a Hijrah Week exhibition.- Bernama

Tennis Anyone?
Collecting stamps doesn’t make you a ‘Dork’ Maria!
WTA adds Malaysia to 2010 events.
The Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) in collaboration with promoters Carbon Media Management and the Youth and Sports Ministry will host the Malaysian Tennis Classic 2010 at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort from Feb 22-28.
With Malaysia joining a select number of countries in Asia to host the Tour event, the tournament will be guaranteed of the presence of at least two players from the top 20. Besides a 32-player singles competition, the tournament will also have a doubles event featuring 16 pairs.
The LTAM president, Datuk Abdul Razak Latiff, said that Malaysia would be hosting a WTA-sanctioned event for the first time.
“It is something that was introduced to me when I was very young,” the 22-year-old said.“I have been very lucky over the years to travel to some amazing countries and I always try to collect stamps from every place I go.
“I am hoping one day that I will be able to hand my collection over to my kids.”
Usually influential for her racket skills and ‘marketers dream’ looks over her off-court hobbies, Sharapova’s admission has contributed to a more fashionable image for the most traditional of pastimes.
Stamp sales have increased by 30 percent in the last month according to ebay, while the Royal Philatelic society has noticed a significant rise in its membership.
Sharapova first admitted to the unlikely hobby in 2006, though at the time, she appeared less than reluctant to divulge the information, muttering; “Everyone’s calling me a dork now.”
