Salam Maal Hijrah 1431H...

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah will open the national-level Maal Hijrah 1431H/2009 celebration themed "Strengthening Fraternity, Empowering the Community" at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on Friday.

A statement from the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said the theme was in line with the government's efforts to build a united society based on the 1Malaysia concept by building unity and strengths.

This is to create a community of excellenc that is able to compete and face the challenges of globalisation and in science and technology as prescribed by Islam.

The highlight of the celebration will be the announcement of two Tokoh Maal Hijrah Award winners from among local and foreign distinguish personalities.

The recipients must have a wide and deep knowledge of Islam, have outstanding character and personality, and have contributed to the propagation of Islam and development of the ummah (Muslim community).

Each of the recipients will receive cash of RM100,000, a plaque, medal and certificate of appreciation.

Up to 2008, 19 individuals from different backgrounds and professions had been bestowed with the award.

The statement said the government organised the Maal Hijrah celebration yearly as a continuous effort to encourage Muslims to remember the Islamic calendar via learning about Islamic history and the major historical event of Hijrah, which was the flight of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.

"Muslims must learn from this major event by effecting change in various aspects of their own lives to achieve distinction," it said.

In conjunction with the Maal Hijrah national-level celebration this time, a special forum with the panellists comprising Ustaz Farid Ravi Abdullah and Ustaz Badli Shah Alaudin will be held at Masjid Negara tomorrow.

There will also be religious talks, gotong-royong, nasyid competition, visits to Orang Asli settlements, hospitals and orphanages, programmes with the disabled, and a Hijrah Week exhibition.- Bernama
